Connected Conservation Foundation (CCF) is excited to hire a part-time Protected Area Support Technician to help maintain and implement conservation technology solutions in Protected Areas across Africa. This is a unique opportunity to work with technology experts across conservation, protected areas, and corporate organisations such as Cisco, NTT Data, Airbus Foundation, and Actility, alongside conservation field partners such as the Northern Rangelands Trust. You’ll help us join capabilities across partner organisations to put technology to work for nature, people and wildlife.

Location: East or Southern Africa
Contract: Two-year contract / Part-Time (3 or 3.5 days a week)

You’ll work at home remotely, and travel to field sites across Uganda, South Africa and Kenya, where approximately 30% of your time will be spent travelling to the field to support Protected Areas. You’ll have an eye for new technologies, research, and opportunities that could benefit our partners.

You’ll work collaboratively with the Protected Area Technician working in each Protected Area, and engineers in corporate organisations. You’ll support IoT implementations, participate in researching new opportunities and help land technologies to meet unique conservation challenges. Daily, you will work closely with field teams to provide remote IT support, with some travel to field-based conservation areas to install and maintain equipment, troubleshooting malfunctions and advising on enhancements, to solve problems quickly.

This role requires a passion for conservation of nature and for the great outdoors, as well as technology focus areas such as IoT, security, networking, telemetry and cloud technologies. Your expertise will ensure the reliable operation of data analytics and management tools, power systems, communications networks, surveillance, and IoT devices that support security and conservation efforts. 

Primary responsibilities:

1. Remote Support for CCF’s IoT partners

  • Respond to customers' requests for help, and manage through a ticket tracking system
  • Help with troubleshooting and general IT support for CCF’s partners
  • Make routine updates to IoT systems
  • Update knowledge bases for staff to refer to and for partners to self-manage
  • Walk new partners through software-use through an online video conference

2. Installation, Maintenance, Monitoring, and Troubleshooting of field-based equipment

  • Network infrastructure
    - Internet Access and Backbone (repeaters, servers, switches, LAN, VPN, WAP, Wi-Fi)
    - Radio Communications (repeaters, base stations, handheld programming)
    - IoT, Low Power Wide Area Networks (LoRaWAN/Sigfox sensor management, gateways, servers)
    - Field GPS and emergency satellite communication systems
    - Oversee Security Systems (Digital Firewalls, CCTV, license plate recognition)
    - Cyber security controls, including firewalls, user VPNs and site-to-site VPNs
  • Power Systems
    - Grid (UPS)
    - Off-grid renewables (Solar)
  • Digital Security and Cloud Systems (firewall)
  • Data collection systems (rugged phones, trackers, camera traps)
  • Sensor integration and monitoring with IoT Software

3. Deployment and configuration of EarthRanger / SERCA / ESRI / Ecoscope Software, including dashboarding, monitoring and management

Additional responsibilities:

  • Monitor and report on performance (downtime, outages, system health)
  • Manage hardware inventory and procurement (computers, IoT devices, radios, stock take, spares)
  • Conferencing Communications and Videography Systems
  • Writing installation and maintenance reports, cybersecurity analysis and pre-deployment assessments
  • Assisting CCF's Technology Project Manager with technology selection, procurement and evaluation

Essential skills and qualifications:

  • Knowledge of relevant software and hardware, and qualification in computer system administration
  • Experience in power, networking and remote communications
  • Familiarity with report writing and critical thinking analysis
  • Partnership engagement and service skills to solve problems together
  • Clear verbal and written communication (via digital channels)
  • Adaptable to isolation, capable of working independently and coordinating with remote teams
  • Able to work at heights, lift heavy equipment and endure harsh conditions
  • 4x4 driving proficiency and remote camp setup experience
  • Basic First Aid and risk mitigation for hazardous environments (remote, heights, dangerous animals)
  • Self-sufficient problem-solver who is comfortable with trial-and-error learning.
  • Project and third-party management for repairs and external support (second/third line)
  • Good time management 
  • Attention to detail
